The following are some commonly asked questions regarding physical therapy:

Following surgery or injury a physician may prescribe physical therapy. All physical therapy treatment has four main goals: alleviate inflammation/pain, restore mobility, restore strength and restore function (i.e., work, sports, etc.).

How do I know a facility is experienced and equipped to treat my condition?

The staff of any reputable physical therapy office should be willing to take time to meet with you for a discussion of your treatment, and/or a tour of the facility prior to your first session. At NSPT we will gladly meet with you for the above or even to have an evaluation of your injury with a discussion of treatment, free of charge, in order that you feel confident you will receive effective and efficient treatment for your condition.

Will insurance cover my therapy expenses?

Therapy services are covered by most insurance plans. At NSPT, we participate with most insurance plans as preferred providers (see reverse for complete list). In many cases out of network benefits are extended to policyholders allowing them to choose the facility which best suits there needs. Our experienced, friendly office staff can help with insurance claims. No claim forms are necessary, NSPT sends all claims electronically.

What will happen on the first day of therapy?

After arriving for your first scheduled appointment, you will be instructed to fill out necessary paperwork. After that, the physician's prescription will be reviewed, you will be evaluated by the physical therapist and treatment will begin. All treatment is administered by the therapist, and as long as your appointment times are consistent, you will be seen by the same therapist. Treatment sessions usually last one hour and fifteen minutes and consist of therapeutic modalities and therapeutic exercise.

How does the therapist communicate with my physician?

Your doctor will receive notification of your initial visit and treatment plan. Follow-up phone calls and/or progress notes will be given as needed.

Is it necessary to see a doctor before seeing a physical therapist?

New York state law allows patients to have physical therapy treatment without a doctor's prescription. Treatment can be rendered for 10 visits or 30 days, whichever occurs first. After that point, a doctor's prescription is required.

Will you accept my insurance?

Nassau Suffolk Physical Therapy accepts many major insurance plans. Your insurance plan may require you to pay a co-payment for each visit. We strongly urge prospective patients to know their policy before starting physical therapy.
